Browse Online Courses in Google HigherEd

Gary Thorup

Have you ever searched for a movie or recipe in Google and found how easy it was to browse through the results by swiping left and right via the carousel feature? That feature uses Google’s Rich Cards to present search results in a way that makes it easier to research results by altering the User Interface and making it more “game” or “app” like and therefore easier to browse.

“Rich cards are a new Search result format building on the success of rich snippets. Just like rich snippets, rich cards use schema.org structured markup to display content in an even more engaging and visual format, with a focus on providing a better mobile user experience.” – Google Webmaster Central Blog

Yesterday, Google announced that they are extending Rich Cards to new verticals and that includes Online courses.

“Evolution of search results for queries like [best New Orleans restaurants] and [leadership courses]: with rich cards, results are presented in new UIs, like carousels that are easy to browse by scrolling left and right, or a vertical three-pack that displays more individual courses.” – Google Webmaster Central Blog

Why Are Rich Cards Important?

One of Google’s missions is to speed up the internet. In that regard, Google has provided a protocol for “marking up” a site so that Google’s crawlers can quickly identify structured data on your website that highlight Online courses.

“By building Rich Cards, you have a new opportunity to attract more engaged users to your page.” – Google Webmasters Blog

Although not required for Rich Cards for Online courses, an understanding of AMP HTML and its use can help speed up page load speeds on mobile devices, and therefore Google will reward sites that use AMP HTML with better rankings.
